Question of the Week: What's Your Favourite Travel Souvenir?

I love to travel and I always seize the opportunity to experience different cultures and see different places whenever I can. Road trips, cruises, backpacking tours, bus tours and visiting friends and family abroad have taken me to many different places around the world.

Famous landmarks, structures, museums, art galleries, beaches, natural wonders, urban areas, stores and anything else that helps to define a vacation destination contributes to that holiday experience and a way to prolong the memory of that holiday experience comes in the form of a souvenir.

Souvenirs can range from traditional tourist souvenirs (items that usually have an inscription of the vacation location), such as fridge magnets, mugs, and other tourist paraphernalia to non-traditional souvenirs (items that do not contain an inscription of the vacation location), such as prints from museums, sea shells and rocks collected on an exotic beach, or even a home furnishing acquired from an exclusive retailer – the possibilities are endless. Basically, anything that was acquired while on a trip abroad that instills memories and contains sentimental value to you qualifies as a souvenir.

We all have something that we have picked up while on vacation and incorporated into our living space. Personally, I have a couple of souvenirs that I hold very dear to my heart due to the fond vacation memories associated to these treasures. The first is a variety of seashells that I collected while on vacation in St. Thomas and the second is a pirate ship from Antigua (see them above, along with other cherished souvenirs from members of the HGTV editorial team). I have these displayed in my living room and they function to provide interest to my space and they act as reminders of amazing trips gone by.

What's your favourite travel souvenir and how do you display it?

Leave a comment and let us know or share a picture of your display with the HGTV.ca community by posting your image to our Style Sheet flickr photo group or email your picture(s) to stylesheet(at)hgtv(.)ca.

Christmas Ornaments.  Yes, I'm that girl that buys the Christmas ornaments in the gift shops.  I buy an ornament (or two) everywhere we go, and our Christmas tree is entirely decorated with these ornaments.  It makes for a wonderful trip down memory lane each December when we put the tree up!

I guess it is kinda cheap...but I collect  the "Do Not Disturb" signs we hang on the hotel bedroom doors.  Also rocks.  I have rocks from all over the place and all different sizes and shapes.  I  scatter them throughout my flower garden.  Not very interesting...but I like them!

Those prints from China are so cute!

My favorite souvenir is an African mask I picked up while on an African safari because it reminds me of the beautiful African wilderness and the people that we met on our trip. I have it hanging above my sofa in my living room and it watches over me and my family.

My favourite souvenir is a little box of sand I got from Egypt.  I collected the sand myself from Abu Simbel.  I risked life and limb to nab the sand without getting caught.

My favourite store bought souvenir is a musical snow globe depicting Elphaba (Wicked Witch of the West) from the musical "Wicked".  This was from when I saw the show on Broadway in NYC.

I collect bells, a tradition I got from my parents when they were alive. I make sure they have the name of the place where I visited. In fact my collection got so large I just had to buy an antique china cabinet to display them, well that's my excuse for buying the cabinet.

We try to collect pen and ink drawings.  They are getting more difficult to find.

When we traveled to the Grand Canyon and Egypt we settled for photos but I don't really like them.  My husband choose them.

My absolute favorite is the Seattle Pioneer Square Pergola, that was later destroyed by a trucker

I too collect ornaments which I hang on my Christmas Tree.  They are not all "Christmas" ornaments but something that I can hang on the tree and I try to either get something with the name of the place or something that I can paint the name and date on.  I reminisce every year while decorating.

I also take lots of pictures and gather postcards of the places we've been.

I collect photo frames. They can be put on display and used in home decorating, and yet remind me of our fabulous trip.

Wherever we go, we pick up a rock and bring it home.  This is probably frowned upon when we visit our National Parks system, but that makes it all the more thrilling.  We keep the rocks in different spots around the house or in our gardens.

My favourite souvenier is a locally carved stone plaque bought in western Belize. It is mounted in a shadow box, affixed with self-adhesive velcro, and the inscription carved on the back is printed on attractive card-stock, mounted below the plaque.

On another note, and at the risk of sounding like a prig, it amazes me how people justify their actions. What they've taken from historical and environmentally sensitive sites, as a "cool souvenier," can never be replaced. As the saying goes, "take only pictures, steal only time, leave only footprints."In this day and age of environmental awareness, people should be taking more responsibility for their actions.

I have a query/comment for Colin & Justin:  I have watched your show "Heist" for a while now and want to put this thought to you -instead of chopping, ripping, tearing and destroying cupboards, doors, etc., why not choose some that aren't too terribly hideous and  donate them to a "resale" store?  Love the show, love your accents, love to you both !

My husband & I bought a 5x7 area rug in Turkey when we were on our honeymood almost 20 years ago.  We've had it hung on the stairwell wall at all three of our homes we've lived in since and it's a wonderful reminder of the start of our life together....and it's been great to hide uneven plaster too!

My favorite treasure is a shell from the beach in Hawaii where our son and daughter-in-law were married on 7/7/07. I proudly display it in a memory box on the wall in our family room along with the wrappers from the wedding favors that I took all the way from to NJ to Hawaii for their special day. Also in the memory box is a brochure from Pearl Harbor which we visited on the Fourth of July which was very moving to our family. Everybody who comes into our home comments on the memory box that we made from this special occasion in our lives.

I am not really a souvenir collector, however have picked up items for others to bring back as gifts/tokens.  If anything I enjoy my photographs and/or will will settle for a few postcards as a personal memento.
