Question of the Week: Are Stainless Steel Appliances Getting Tired? If So, What’s Next?

Photo: Caplan's Appliances show room in Toronto.  (A great store BTW, if you're in the Toronto area, with top notch selection of appliance options, not just stainless. They've a few promotions on right now as well!)

First off, stainless appliances have been popular for more than two decades now, and I think it’s fair to say that there is ‘stainless’ and then there is stainless… My parents have ‘stainless’ appliance from the mid 90s and let me tell you, they don’t look far behind the original mobile phone.

But more and more I hear people referring to stainless appliances as tacky. They are certainly the standard in every modern kitchen, and as such, a tad overused, but tacky? If stainless is tacky, where are we to go next?

LG has brought colour back to the appliance, and many are camouflaging their dishwashers with the same veneer as their cabinetry, but will that be the new stainless?

What do you think?  Are you sick of the stainless reign?

Please leave your comments below and take the poll!

Stainless steel will never be tacky. It's the de facto material for commercial kitchens, so I guess when we stop fancying ourselves "at-home gourmets" we'll stop with the stainless steel. My mother used to buy every appliance in "almond" as in a warm off-white. Hideous. To me anyway.

Stainless steel seems to be popular all the time, it has its ups and downs but it is durable and attractive. It will be with us for a long time to come.

has anyone checked out the Bonpani fridges from Italy or Zmeg...they are fun, not just an industrial necessity they are an accesory...so why don't we manufacture stuff like that?

I like the look of stainless steel appliances, but not the finger marks they so clearly display. Found appliances made of "Clean Steel" trimmed with a little black. Nice look and no annoying finger marks.

Stainless steel takes the class away from ANY kitchen. Why people actually like it is beyond me! The last thing i would want is for the fridge to dominate the kitchen. Check-out JenAir's line of bronze appliances, now we're talking class!!

I have worked for several years in the hospitality industry in several positions, a fair number in the kitchens of resorts/hotels/restaurants.  As such to me stainless steel appliances remind me to much of an instuition/commercial restaurant and as such I refuse to have them in the house plus the fact they tend to be pricey.  I would sooner go with white.

We recently moved into a brand new high rise condo unit with all 'stainless steel' appliances.  I spent half of my kitchen cleaning just trying to wipe off the finger marks.  It is not for me as I have done my share of kitchen cleaning in younger years; I want less work now!  Maybe it is a poor quality type (GM) which shows more marks than it should?

I believe that stainless steel is getting old. The finger marks all over my fridge and stove just doesnt cut it anymore. I prefer the built in appliances. Although it may be more expensive, no finger marks are worth the splurge!

Although in the past the steel look has been said to be the more "modern & sleek" way to go, I think we are approaching a new era where the modern contemporary look is more acceptable.  The stainless steel may be for some people, however, I just don't see it working for the type of design that I'm looking for!

Sorry stainless steel, looks like your booted!!!

Stainless steel will always be a good look for any kitchen. Its a modern, clean look and gives off an inviting appeal to the kitchen. I would stick to stainless steel!

I do not consider Stainless tacky, however  since they are a dime-a-dozen,   which once was considered  a novelty is now considered  very common.

Personally I am happy that the Manufacturers may be bringing back color into the kitchen.    Hopefully while doing  so, they will abolish 'black' while they are at it.   It is worse to maintain than stainless.   Who design these things anyways?

I will shortly be totally renovating a kitchen.  Not sure about stainless, don't want white and hate black (appliances) - what to do!!

I am in the process of designing a new home and I told myself no SS or granite, I wanted something different and feel that are over done and will be on the way out in the next few years.  But with basically three choices (SS, black and white, SS is the lesser of three evils for the look I am going for.  I would have loved copper but it would be a maintenance nightmare.  There are the Jenn Air Oil Bronze applainces but I saw a frig on display and noticed the finish was scratched, if this were to happen I don’t see any way to repair (the finish is basically stainless underneath the bronze finish).  One emerging trend is mirrored glass, but it’s not for me.  I will do as many appliances in cabinet panels as possible, which leaves the microwave and range to deal with.  I considered a vintage stove, they are gorgeous but not very particle (IMO).  There are some companies that make retro looking new appliances in a rainbow of great colors, Northstar by Elmira stove is a leading contender for me or for something more main streamline like Viking who does the classic commercial range in a ton of colors.  Bertazzoni also has more than a handful of “Italian” colors and Dacor has a few contemporary colors (ice blue, slate green, etc) in one of their lines.  BTW, I will probably use a drawer or base cabinet for a SS microwave (to keep it out of view) which seems to be a old trend coming back.

Why would you want your kitchen to look like a morgue?  Even some of the sinks and faucets look more like the morgue sinks, faucets and autopsy tables than industrial kitchens. (work in one...I know what I'm talking about).

I have stainless and although I like the look I really dislike cleaning them ,special clothes, special cleaners, don't use lemon scented dish soap etc etc I don't have the time....
