Makeover: Modern, Eco-Friendly Nursery

This week on Pure Design, designer and host Samantha Pynn tackles a nursery for soon-to-be parents Helen and Niall. The result is a baby room that's hip, colourful and eco-friendly.

My favourite part of the room? The do-it-yourself paper lantern mobile and wallpaper animal decals. Full step-by-step instructions can be found on the Pure Design site.

Eco-Tips from Samantha Pynn

Tip #1: Lighter paint colours contain less pigment and usually have lower VOCs, which means they produce less harmful gas than darker colours.

Tip #2: When looking for crib mattresses, lean towards ones that use natural types of flame-retardant powders on the mattress foam, such as baking soda or cilia. This is a more eco-friendly and healthy option to the toxic chemicals that are conventionally used.

Looks wonderful!  There are seemingly endless possibilities when looking to redecorate sustainably and healthfully.  Some things to look into when redoing baby's room: Plant-based and zero VOC paints; Organic merino wool mattresses (naturally flame resistant); Organic, Fair Trade and non-synthetically dyed clothing/bedding; PVC-free, Fair Trade, non-toxic toys; Sustainable Wood furniture, treated without harsh chemicals like formaldehyde, which won't off-gas; Recycled fiber carpets (Interlock is one of the best); LED light bulbs; Natural cleaning supplies and air fresheners.

As always, follow the Precautionary Principal and consider that less is often more-especially in the absence of hard, verifiable evidence.

I saw this show air last year and loved the room. Just wondering if there is a web site for all the cute stuffed dolls..?
